MPD: 14-year-old student arrested after police find gun near La Follette High School

A 14-year-old boy was arrested after a gun was found tucked in a tree on the city’s east side Thursday, Madison Police Department reported Friday.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A 14-year-old boy was arrested after a gun was found tucked in a tree on the city’s east side Thursday, Madison Police Department reported Friday.

According to MPD, staff called authorities after hearing a La Follette High School student may have a gun on school grounds.

Police said the student left the school for a short time and then returned later.

Authorities then searched the nearby neighborhood with a K-9 team, reviewed camera footage and canvassed the area. MPD said officers found the gun in a tree along the 5300 block of Alder Drive.

The teen is facing changes for adjudicated delinquent in possession of a firearm, theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

He was taken to the Juvenile Reception Center.

A letter was sent home to La Follette families on Thursday regarding the incident.
