Two dead in Hwy 51 crash north of Madison
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A crash Sunday morning left two people dead, one person injured and closed U.S. Hwy 51 south of County Road DM, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.
Just after 11 a.m., deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, along with units from the Deforest Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Deforest Fire and EMS, responded to the crash.
Their preliminary investigation shows that two cars were driving northbound on Hwy 51 when one car, driven by a 43-year-old man, crashed into another car driven by a 23-year-old man. The crash pushed the 23-year-old’s car into oncoming traffic, where it was then hit by a car traveling southbound. The 67-year-old male driver of the southbound car was not injured, according to the sheriff’s office.
The 23-year-old driver died at the scene, and his 23-year-old female passenger died after being taken to the hospital. The 43-year-old driver of the other northbound vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The identities of the deceased will be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office at a later date.
Both lanes of Hwy 51 between County Hwy DM and County Hwy V were closed for an investigation from deputies and a crash reconstructionist.
