DPI seeking sponsors to provide meals to rural, low-income kids during summer
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction said they are looking for sponsors to support their Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
The program’s goal is to bring healthy meals to children living in economically disadvantaged and rural areas during the summer months, when students do not have access to school meals.
School districts partner with area organizations to extend the SFSP beyond summer school programs, DPI explained. Sponsors can be:
- Public or private
- Nonprofit school food authorities or nonprofit summer camps
- Units of local, municipal, county, tribal or state governments
- Private nonprofit organizations with certain special considerations and restrictions
- Public or private colleges or universities currently participating in the National Youth Sports and Precollege Programs
Last year, SFSP sponsors served over 2.8 million meals, officials said.
Those interested in becoming a sponsor can SFSP@dpi.wi.gov and complete the SFSP application by June 15.
