UW Health experts discuss binge drinking effects during Alcohol Awareness Month
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - April marks Alcohol Awareness Month, and UW Health experts are warning Wisconsinites about the effects of binge drinking.
According to a recent survey from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 20% of people admitted to binge drinking within the past month.
Dr. Elizabeth Salisbury-Afshar, who is an addiction medicine physician with UW Health, encourages Wisconsinites to reach out to those they believe are struggling.
“I think leading with compassion and leading with ‘I care about you’ and ‘I’ve seen some of these things, are you doing, OK?’ is generally a good way to go. Less alcohol is going to be better for your health in the long run.”
According to the survey, Wisconsinites in every age group engaged in more binge drinking than the rest of the United States.
