Wisconsin’s baseball pioneer Reedsburg makes history again: 14U team advances to Babe Ruth World Series
Playing together as a team, helped this team from Reedsburg reach new heights.
REEDSBURG, Wis. (WMTV) - In 1951, the city of Reedsburg made Wisconsin sports history by hosting the state’s very first Little League team—a legacy the community proudly celebrated for its 75th anniversary earlier this year. Now, the historic baseball town has another historic milestone to celebrate.
The Reedsburg 14U Babe Ruth baseball team is headed to the Babe Ruth World Series after capturing the Regional Championship over the weekend in dramatic, walk-off fashion in Kentucky.
The thrilling regional victory capped off an incredible postseason run that also saw the team claim the Wisconsin State Championship. The team is now preparing to represent their hometown on the global stage in Eagle Pass, Texas, with World Series play running from August 6 through August 16.
For Head Coach Travis Bohen, the team’s historic run is a testament to the exceptionally tight bond his players share both on and off the field.
“They have an absolute blast,” Coach Bohen said. “They’re a very, very close group on the field, and off the field, they are even closer. They’re together any free moment that they have, and they look forward to the next weekend of competition. So they feed off of each other, and they have a great time playing together.”
That camaraderie has translated to elite play on the diamond. Representing a small Wisconsin community of roughly 10,000 people, the players are eager to prove that small-town teams can compete with anyone in the world.
“I think it’s awesome because we get to represent our hometown, and we only have like 10,000 people,” said Reedsburg catcher Drew Weber. “I think it’s going to be awesome to just go down there, represent Reedsburg, and show everybody that Reedsburg can compete with people from around the world.”
As the team continues to practice and prepare for their trip to Texas, the entire Reedsburg community has rallied behind them. Coach Bohen hopes this historic achievement leaves a lasting legacy for the next generation of local ballplayers.
“Very proud, very proud,” Bohen added. “I’m proud of the players, proud of the organization, and proud of the community, and proud to be a part of the community. Hopefully, this inspires a lot of the younger generation, the younger players, to stay with Reedsburg because if you trust the process, this is where you can wind up.”
The Reedsburg 14U team will begin their quest for a World Series title on August 6.
