Polar plungers jump into the water for Special Olympics Wisconsin
MONONA, Wis. (WMTV) - Brave souls took an icy dip in Monona on Saturday for Wisconsin’s 25th Annual Polar Plunge series supporting Special Olympics Wisconsin.
While it was 19 F outside, it felt like 7 F. Despite the frigid temperatures, plungers jumped into the Yahara River. Special Olympics Wisconsin Board of Directors Member Chris Leemon has participated in 24 out of the 25 plunges. He said the tradition and fun energy has him coming back every year.
“It’s a great time to support the athletes across the state of Wisconsin and raise some funds. You make some good memories, too. It’s a little cold this year, but not the coldest we’ve had,” Leemon said.
More than 885 people participated at Lottes Park to raise funds for Special Olympics Wisconsin. The organization’s President & CEO Chad Hershner said the money raised helps make Special Olympics Wisconsin grow.
“So, for some people, it’s a tradition. It’s something they want to do to raise money, to give back and support the Special Olympics. Sometimes, too, it’s families and businesses. A whole community comes together for this amazing organization,” Hershner explained.
Throughout February and March, other polar plungers across the state are participating at seven other locations in 2024, including the first-ever ADA-compliant inclusive plunge at Whitewater Aquatic Center on March 9th.
At this event in Monona, Hershner said his favorite part was watching the many participants jump in the water with adrenaline and seeing others come out to support.
“Seeing the athletes here and seeing the excitement [is my favorite part]. Everybody is here cheering everybody on as they’re getting ready to take that dip into the cold water,” Hershner said. “So, the energy is just contagious.”
After the plunge, participants and watchers alike got to warm up and enjoy activities the rest of the day.
