Dane Co. detectives recover $4k for victim in cryptocurrency scam
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Dane County Sheriff’s Office detectives recovered thousands of dollars for a victim in an online cryptocurrency scam that happened earlier this year.
The agency recounted Thursday how, in February, the victim used a sponsored, third-party link on what he thought was a legitimate website to pay for a streaming service.
The fraudulent link caused the victim’s bank account to become compromised, and someone overseas gained access to the individual’s cell phone and personal information. Dane Co. detectives said the scammer got into the victim’s account to transfer funds using cryptocurrency, and moved thousands of dollars over.
Fast-forwarding to June 9, Dane Co. Sheriff’s Office said a detective worked with the Wisconsin Department of Justice- Division of Criminal Investigation to find and return some of the lost funds. Officials say the cryptocurrency portion recovered is valued at $4,000.
Dane Co. detectives noted this recovery is a first for the sheriff’s office, and only one of 10 instances in the entire state. Officials described this as an exceedingly rare feat because of cryptocurrency’s anonymity and complexity.
“We understand how devastating these scams can be—not just financially, but emotionally,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “This case shows that even in the evolving world of cybercrime, we are adapting and working hard to recover what’s been lost and hold scammers accountable.”
Officials reminded Dane Co. residents to be wary of unsolicited calls and emails demanding money, especially if they involve crypto or gift cards. “Sponsored” links that pop up after using a search engine can also be a front for fraudulent sites, Dane County officials said. Ultimately, residents should trust their gut if they think something is suspicious.
