MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A man is in critical condition after a Madison crash over the weekend that killed three people and a dog, the police department said in an update Monday.

Madison Police Department said the 39-year-old is being treated at a local hospital.

The deadly rollover crash happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near Cross Country Road and Ambleside Drive, on Madison’s southwest side.

MPD said the group had left a nearby tavern before getting into the vehicle, and then headed eastbound on Cross Country Road.

The police department said the three people who died are a 31-year-old woman, a 43-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man.

The police department did not release the names of the victims.

MPD added a small dog was in the car and died in the crash.

The police department believes speed and impairment are factors in the crash. No one was wearing seatbelts, police said.

“If the person is of legal drinking age, over 21, the liability for a crime, like causing the death while driving and having had too much to drink, it is on the driver,” Lanny Glindberg, a clinical law associate professor at UW-Madison said.

It is unclear who was driving during the crash.

MPD said the crash is still under investigation.
