MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, June 18, 1928, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Earhart didn’t make the trip alone - she was accompanied by two pilots.

Though Earhart was licensed to fly the plane, she helped with flight logs and navigation checks instead.

Although Earhart wasn’t piloting this flight, she took charge just four years later, becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

Mechanical issues and strong winds impacted that flight, but overall it was a success.

When Earhart landed in Northern Ireland, a farmer asked her if she had flown far. She responded, “from America.”

Earhart attempted to become the first woman to fly across the globe in 1937, but she disappeared mid-trip.

To this day, no one knows where she went.
